BJP MP assures to renovate Kambar samadhi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Rajya Sabha member and ardent lover of ‘Thirukural’, Tarun Vijay, has assured to renovate Kambar ‘samadhi’, the memorial site of the great poet at Nattarasankottai and help Kamban Kazhagam establish an academy for Tamil language and research.
Addressing the 77th Kamban Thirunal at Kamban Mani Mandapam here on Wedenesday, Mr. Vijay, who had visited the memorial during his ‘Thirukural Thirupayanam’ in January, said he would ensure that the samadhi became one of the best memorials in the country.
The MP from Uttarakhand was responding to Pala. Palaniappan, secretary of Kamban Kazhagam, who regretted that the samadhi presented a sight of neglect and pleaded for its renovation. He made a comparison to William Shakespeare’s memorial in the UK and regretted that Kambar samadhi was in a shambles.
Mr. Vijay also announced a donation of Rs. 5 lakh to Kamban Kazhagam for buying books for the library and assured to use his good offices with the BJP-led government at the Centre for issuing a memorial stamp on Saw Ganesan, the founder of Kamban Kazhagam.
He also said he would arrange for distribution of 5,000 portraits of Kambar to school and college students in north India to popularise the great poet.
The MP who was impressed by the grandeur of century- old Chettinad houses and the cultural heritage of the town, said he impress upon the Union Tourism Minister to include Karaikudi in the country’s tourism map. “The beauty of the cultural city should be showcased to the domestic and international tourists,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, Justice V Ramasubramaniyam, Judge of the Madras High Court, paid glowing tributes to Kambar, saying the poet had talked about everything right from governance to biodiversity, medicine, astrology, astrophysics and consumerism.
No weekend passed without Kamban Vizha celebrated somewhere in the world and that was the greatness of the poet, the judge said.
